01
What motivated you to join the company?

"I studied speech techniques in college. This made me want to work in hospitality, using my speech skills. I thought that hotel staff need to have good speaking manners.
I love Shiga Prefecture, my home -prefecture. So, I wanted to work in Shiga or Kyoto, within my commuting range. Meanwhile, the Urban Hotel Group operates hotels in Shiga and Kyoto. This was one of the reasons for me to decide to work for the group."

Current work

"I am responsible for answering calls for reservations from individual guests and client companies, as well as serving guests in our restaurant for light meals and breakfast and ordering raw materials for the meals we provide.
I also take care of providing information to guests. So, I collect information on such things as restaurants and seasonal events in the surrounding area and obtain the relevant pamphlets. Updating the hotel’s information board is my job, too."

Most rewarding part of my job

I enjoy talking with our guests at the front desk, learning a lot about their local places. We request our guests at check-in to fill in their addresses and other information. This tells us that our guests come from various places in Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. One time, when I noticed that a guest and I had the same name, we had a lively conversation. I felt really happy when a guest thanked me for the sightseeing information that I had provided.

Future objectives

I did track and field for 10 years. So, I want to be in charge of group reservations relating to the national ekiden championships or other large sport events held in Kyoto. A top priority for me now is to learn the basics of hotel work. When I get accustomed to my regular work, I want to create the work that only I can perform. My goal is to work as a mediator in the company.

What motivated you to join the company?

I always wanted to become a public service worker, and I already had passed the tests to become a police officer and firefighter. However, I felt somehow that these jobs were not what I was really looking for. At such time, I participated in an information session of Urban Hotel System, and thought that I wanted to work at the company to test my ability. My first impression was that the company was full of young and energetic staff members. The recruiter was in his 20’s, about my age, and showed great passion for his work. Therefore, I felt that I would enjoy working at this company and find something that I really wanted to do.

Current work

"I am in charge of various kinds of work, including front desk work, management of facilities and equipment (IT network, guest rooms, and public spa), and sales work, such as offering packages to travel agencies and setting accommodation prices. My duties cover a wide range of tasks, including serving guests, sales, planning, and management. Every staff member is responsible for work in many fields, trying hard to create a comfortable space for our guests from their point of view. I believe that this is the unique characteristic and strength of our company.
"

Most rewarding part of my job

I currently work at Urban Hotel Kyoto-Nijo PREMIUM. This is my fifth year working at our company, and I have now many junior colleagues. Working at the middle management level, I give guidance to younger members. In addition, I play a role as a mediator to convey the opinions of those working at the front desk to my senior colleagues and supervisors to create a better working environment. Of course, this is challenging work, but I am enjoying it at the same time. I also feel that I want to meet the expectations of our company, which provides me, at age 25, with the opportunity to perform such a responsible role.

Future objectives

I want to get involved in developing new projects. Furthermore, I aim to become the hotel manager within five years. I still have a lot to learn, and I know that this is a very difficult objective to achieve. However, I believe that it is not an unachievable goal as I continue to enjoy working here.

03
What motivated you to join the company?

I was always interested in service-related jobs. In particular, I thought that I was best suited to working at hotels, which requires courteous service, conversation skills, and good manners.

Current work

I basically work night shifts, serving guests at the front desk and receiving reservations. At other times, I work as an outside sales representative.

Most rewarding part of my job

I feel happy when I receive a compliment from a guest I have served. In addition, I feel greatly rewarded when we see an increase in sales from the firms whom I contacted.

What is your most memorable work experience?

It is the business trip to Taiwan that I took as a sales representative. It is inspiring to meet various people outside our company during sales activities. Furthermore, working overseas was a rare and valuable experience for me.

What is the challenge you face in your work?

"I especially struggle with language barriers. Kyoto is one of the leading tourist destinations in Japan, receiving many tourists from all over the world.
In communicating in a language that I am totally unfamiliar with, I study up on some basic words of the language, and also try to convey messages with gestures. Through these experiences, I learn words of many languages little by little."

04
Current work

"I create and implement plans to increase the number of reservations using the internet, and analyze the results.
I also design and sell specific stay packages for each season and different target groups.
Through tie-ups with stores and other facilities, I design stay packages that provide guests with opportunities to have unique experiences.
Moreover, I make all kinds of efforts to inform people of the Urban Group hotels, using SNS such as Facebook, Weibo, and LINE. For our official website, which is the “signboard” of our company, I update its contents to suit each season by changing photos."

Most rewarding part of my job

"I feel happy and rewarded when I receive a compliment from our guests. Some guests told me that they had a good time by following my advice on sightseeing. At such times, I feel great joy to work here.
I am responsible for delivering our e-mail newsletter to our guests. When I received an e-mail from a guest saying that the person always enjoys receiving the newsletter, I was very happy. The compliments from our guests give me confidence and joy that cannot be replaced by anything."

What is your most memorable work experience?

It is the project to open the Urban Hotel Minami Kusatsu. By participating in this project, I learned that a great many people and a great deal of time are required to open one hotel. The Urban Hotel Group establishes its hotels by itself, not outsourcing the job to outside companies. Through this experience, I learned so many things by seeing the entire process firsthand.

Future objectives

I want many people to think of Urban Hotels when they consider where to stay in Kyoto. By effectively using our website and SNS, I will bring many guests not only from Japan but from the entire world to our hotels. This is my sixth year working at this company. One of the reasons I continue to enjoy the work here is that I have many talented colleagues. The other reason is that we are provided with opportunities to improve our ability and expand our professional scope, if we have the will to do so. This gives me great motivation for my work.
